Ceiling fans

Ceiling fans are the most ignored lot amongst all the electrical appliances.

At homes, while lights are used at night, fans are used throughout the day.

Regular non star-rated ceiling fans (1200mm sweep) that we most commonly use, consume around 75 watts.

But Star-rated fans consume around 50 watts. Super efficient fans consume only around 35 watts.

You will save lot of energy, by changing over from regular fans to super efficient fans.

Tube lights

Regular tube lights consume upto 55 watts. Tube lights with electronic ballast consume aroud 40 watts.

Star ratings for tube lights vouch for light output after prolonged usage.

LEDs have much longer life and lighting efficiency, when compared to CFLs and Tubes.

LED tubular lights with same lumens output as star rated tubes, are available at 18 watts.

Direct Cool refrigerators are the ones with single door for both freezer and refrigerator. Frost Free refrigerators have different sections for freezer and refrigerator.

Similarly, Inverter technology based refrigerators do not require huge starting currents, as their conventional technology based counterparts do.

Air conditioners

  • Amount of cooling produced by an 1 ton AC amounts to 3,514 watts.

  • Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) of an AC indicates the power it consumes to cool a room to 22° Celsius when it is 35° Celsius outside.

  • A 1-Star rated 1 ton window AC (EER = 2.50) when run for 1 hour, will consume 3514 / 2.50 = 1,405.6 watts (i.e., 1.4 units per hour).

  • But a 5-Star rated 1 ton window AC (EER = 3.30) when run for 1 hour, will consume only 3514 / 3.30 = 1,064.8 watts (i.e., 1.06 units per hour).
Also Inverter technology is the most energy efficient technology available in the market. This technology based ACs don't require huge starting currents.

Water heaters

Using electric boilers for water heating is the most inefficient way of using electricity, as electricty itself is generated by Coal, Gas and Nuclear power plants only from steam produced by heating water.

If you are used to taking bath in hot water every day, and use heater for atleast an hour per day, note that you consume around 60-90 units per month and 120-180 units per billing cycle.

Because, typical instant heaters consume around 3 units per hour, while storage heaters consume around 2 units per hour.

Just think, as to how much good you do to yourself, by doing away with this appliance.

Solar water heaters use sun’s heat to heat water. They can be used with hard water as well.

But when Solar water heaters are unable to produce hot water (during rainy season), do not use heating coils in Solar water heater.

This would wipe out the savings we made by using Solar water heater.

Instead, use a gas-fired boiler to heat water.
